SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count at Osage Park in Bentonville
DESCRIPTION:Join TrailMix NWA for our first-ever group participation in the Great Backyard Bird Count at Osage Park in Bentonville. As part of our new initiative to incorporate monthly themes (announced at the winter retreat) February is all about BIRDS! This annual community science event helps track bird populations and contributes valuable data for conservation efforts\, making it a perfect event for our themed activities.\nWe will gather at 10:00 AM for a brief introduction and to get organized\, then officially begin counting birds at 10:30 AM. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars if they have a pair and to download the Merlin Bird ID app in advance to help with identification. Whether you’re an experienced birder or just getting started\, this is a great opportunity to learn about local birds\, connect with nature\, and be part of a global research initiative.\n\nLet us know if you plan to join us by RVSPing on our Facebook event page — we look forward to a morning of birdwatching together at Osage Park.

SUMMARY:TrailMix at NWA Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Visit our Facebook group and event and please let us know if you would like to represent TrailMix and walk in the parade with us! All TrailMix marchers should find our spot by 4:15 to be prepared for our final roll call at 4:30 — the parade starts at 5. Consider how parking will be competitive and how long it may take you to walk to and find our location – you are also welcome to get there early\, as some folks will be lining up in group D as early as 3PM. Please also consider the heat – you may want to consider bringing a wagon for younger children in addition to water\, sunscreen\, spritzer fans\, etc. and possibly something to keep your kiddos entertained while waiting for the parade to start. We are in Group D\, spot #97 (towards the very end of the parade). Wear whatever you would be wearing to Pride\, and/or your TrailMix shirt if you have one and would like to.

SUMMARY:Summer Campout: Solstice Weekend at Steel Creek
DESCRIPTION:Alright everyone\, after much debate\, your Mod team has decided to keep our summer campout to individual booking like our spring campout. We will be at Steel Creek Campground on the Buffalo National River\, checking in on Friday June 21 and checking out Sunday June 23\, 2024 (the weekend following Summer Solstice). Similarly to before\, there are a limited number of sites available for pre-booking\, so if you’re serious about wanting to join us\, I would not hesitate to book your campsite. If you don’t mind setting your party size to the max of 6 for cushion\, we would appreciate it. You can do so here (you may need to make a Recreation.gov account if you don’t already have one):\nhttps://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10001451 \nThe site cap is more difficult than Devil’s Den – no more than 6 people per site\, though there is plenty of room for multiple tents. If you are a family of 3 or less\, you may wish to discuss here the possibility of sharing a site with others – I realize most of us are families of four. We could have 3 families of 4 across 2 sites and be within their set cap. \nFor two nights\, my site cost the full $40 upfront (unlike Devil’s Den where you pay a deposit). They do give you a 75% refund if you need to cancel as long as you do it the Wednesday before that weekend. [If you should need to cancel at a later date\, I would ask that you coordinate with the group so someone who wasn’t able to reserve a site has a chance.] \nIn addition to the reservable tent sites (1-13)\, there are also reservable sites at the horse camp (but you must have a horse trailer) and quite a few first come\, first serve campsites right next to us if you would like to\, perhaps\, take the day off Friday and head down early. This is a tremendously popular campground in the summer and about 1.5 hours away\, so the chances of finding a FF site after leaving NWA at 5PM is a bit slim. (Again\, if you want to coordinate with someone else on that front\, by all means go for it – but I don’t recall how great cell service is at the campground to communicate with someone back in town.) \nOf course\, if you would like to reserve a private cabin nearby\, go to a different campground such as Kyle’s\, or do some primitive gravel bar camping on your own and join during the day time\, you are more than welcome to. We also ENCOURAGE folks who aren’t interested in the summer campout to still come down and join us for our SOLSTICE PARTY on Saturday! We tentatively plan to go on a hike at Lost Valley\, Steel Creek Overlook\, or the Goat Trail that morning and come back to the campground for festivities as a group following the hike – a more refined lineup of activities will be presented at a later date\, but my family makes day trips out here all the time to go on a hike.

SUMMARY:Play Day at Beaver Lake! (Memorial Day Weekend)
DESCRIPTION:Break out your swimsuits and rash guards\, (rent or) bring your kayaks/paddleboards/floating tubes — let’s have a fun day cooling off by and/or in the water\, whatever way you like!\n\nBring a premade side or something to throw on the grill and let’s enjoy a lakeside BBQ together. (Consider bringing your family’s mess kits\, but compostable utensils and plates are fine if you don’t have them!) Don’t forget plenty of water and sunscreen for the day in addition to your life jackets!\n\nIn addition to the swim beach\, there is a playground\, restroom\, and lots of picnicking areas along the shoreline to the north of the swim beach — the pavilion has been rented by someone else\, so this is NOT a space we will be using — if you have a canopy to set up for shade\, you may consider bringing one. Unfortunately since we’ve had to move swim beaches due to others being closed\, I’m unfamiliar with any kayak rentals in this area — if someone else is\, please post on the event page to inform us! Don’t forget your fishing license if you plan to fish.\n\nKeep in mind that parking is likely to be competitive for Memorial Day weekend — you may consider carpooling and/or arriving early. Parking on the grass isn’t allowed\, and there is a $5/vehicle day use fee.\n\n**DISCLAIMER: Understand that attending any TrailMix event or outing (meet-ups in the park\, hiking\, etc.) carries inherent risks of bodily injury\, emotional distress\, financial loss\, or other adverse outcomes.
